While you may never cruise down Sunset Boulevard, convertible top down and a small purse dog at your side, or shop the exclusive shops along Rodeo Drive, maybe you can spa like a celebrity. In Tinsel Town where the median age is 23 and there are more plastic surgeons than you can shake a stick at, looking beautiful and being pampered is a serious business. Check out these top L.A. day spas:

The “Pink Lady,” or the Beverly Hills Hotel, is a Hollywood icon. Imagine pampering yourself like a star from yesteryear. The luxurious spa is favored by the older Beverly Hills crowd, and treatments include a 60-minute Swedish massage for $145 or really indulge with their “After Shopping Paradise,” a 70-minute reflexology treatment for tired feet and a spectacular pedicure for $180.

If life (or vacation) in the fast lane feels stale, put the producer on hold and go ClubMud at the Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa in Corona. Their mud treatments of red clay are beneficial for absorbing impurities, tightening and revitalizing skin. After covering themselves with mud, guests relax in the sun or the special drying chamber, followed by a cleansing shower. Then guests can head to The Grotto for an intense body moisturizing treatment. A day-long getaway may also include a massage Under the Oaks or a dip in the mineral essential baths that made Glen Ivy famous.

For Yugoslavian-born skin expert Olga Lorencin and renowned restaurateur Christine Splichal, a French native, the concept and creation of Kinara, a skin care clinic, day spa, cafe and boutique, came naturally. The two have set new standards for the ideal spa experience. Kinara, meaning “on the edge,” opened its doors 2002 in West Hollywood to rave reviews. Here exotic woods mix with warm earth tones. The spa offers a variety of facials, a milk bath, and body scrubs using Hawaiian brown sugar. A 50-minute Swedish massage runs $120.

For a little duo time, consider La Petite Retreat Day Spa, one of few spas in L.A. that offers facials and massage as same-room couple’s treatments. Located on Larchmont Boulevard in West Los Angeles near Hollywood’s Paramount Studios, La Petite Retreat is 2,000-square-feet of paradise. Their 60-minute Jade Stone Couples Massage is $150 each.

Celebrity skin care specialist Ole Henriksen, whose client list includes Charlize Theron and Renee Zellweger, is famous for his elaborate facials and body treatments. Located on West Sunset Boulevard, Ole’s nature-based products are used in conjunction with state-of-the-art equipment. If you can’t afford the more expensive treatments, a one-hour Swedish massage runs only $90.

Henriksen’s treatments can also be enjoyed at the One Spa at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, a 7,000-square-foot spa right on the beach. Their signature treatments include the Beach Buff, a Swedish massage and scrub and buff with a sea mineral body scrub. The treatment concludes with a Tropical Train Rince, living the skin smooth and silky.

Although it features some beachfront real estate, the Spa at La Meirgot at the La Merigot Beach Hotel also features relatively affordable spa treatments. Aromatherapy essences greet guests as they enter the doors of this lovely spa where both the hour-long Aromatherapy Massage and Classic European Facial run $105.

For the ultimate experience in luxury, call ahead to make your reservation at the Four Seasons Hotel, Los Angeles at Beverly Hills Spa to ensure your treatment at one of the most elegant spas in L.A. Created exclusively for Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles, the Cleopatra milk and honey treatment cocoons guests in a milk and honey wrap that leaves the skin feeling, well, like baby skin. Their 60-minute California cabana massage is performed in a private poolside cabana for $165. The classic Swedish massage is offered for 60 minutes at $155.

About the Author: Geologix Inc. manufactures spa, massage, skincare, and therapeutic pain relief products using a proprietary formula featuring 34 natural minerals contained in the ancient sea water from the famous Michigan Basin.
When it comes to celebrity magazines, you had better be sure that you are picking the right ones. There are many different magazines that you can choose from, and you will find that the longer you read celebrity magazines, the more apt you are going to be have your favorites when it comes to these magazines and to be able to have magazines that you feel are very important to you when it comes to celebrity news. There are several magazines that you can choose from, and there are several that you should read for in depth coverage of your favorite celebrities and what they are currently up to.

People Magazine

People Magazine has a circulation of 3.75 million and it was named “Magazine of the Year” by Advertising Age in October 2005. This award was for excellence in editorial, circulation and advertising. People offers many celebrity articles, however, they began as a personal interest magazine, and still publish many features on personal interest topics. Along with the stories about celebrities and other things, you will find many different stories about regular people and people who have made the news for many different reasons. People Magazine usually does in depth coverage of personal interest stories and big news stories, and has several famous features. For instance, they do a column each year that talks about who they feel are the sexiest people of that previous year.

Us Weekly

US Weekly is a magazine that is affiliated with People Magazine. US Weekly offers breaking news and information on top celebrity stories and styles. The main focus of the magazine is on celebrities while People centers on personal interest topics. US Weekly has an exclusive deal with MTV’s “The Hills” and has special issues all year long. Some of the topics of these special issues are best bodies and best makeovers. Publisher Jann Wenner insists that US Weekly is “nice to celebrities” and not as gossipy as its competitors.

Star Magazine

Founded in 1974, Star Magazine is mostly tabloid derived, including sections titled “Worst of the Week” which details the worst fashion mistakes of the week and “Knife styles of the Rich and Famous” which cover plastic surgery operations that celebrities have done. Overall, Star Magazine focuses on the latest celebrity news, gossip, photos and exclusives. Star has a “Beauty Club” which gives makeup tips and promotes certain beauty products, and also has weekly quizzes and games.

Ok! Magazine

Ok! Magazine is one of the top magazines when it comes to celebrity gossip. OK! Magazine focuses on exclusive celebrity news, hot photos and videos and fashion trends. OK! Magazine is published in the United States but also circulated in Europe, where it was founded. It is a weekly publication, which helps to retain readers while entertaining them as well. OK! is best known for its top coverage of celebrity weddings and also for exclusive interviews and personal revelations of the hottest celebrities in the entertainment industry. The magazine focuses on positive developments in celebrity’s lives.

Entertainment Weekly

Entertainment Weekly is not tabloid driven like many of its competitors. EW is fashioned toward a more general audience, particularly young people and women. Unlike many of its competitors, Entertainment Weekly focuses on breaking entertainment news about celebrities, TV shows, movies, music and books. EW also contains celebrity interviews, movie and DVD reviews including top selling book, music and DVD titles.

No matter which of the news magazines you are reading on a daily basis, you should be sure to know that each of these magazines provides a slightly different take on the entertainment world. There are many talented actors and musicians who do not receive any mention in these publications. Besides the titles listed above, there are more in-depth and specialized magazines to choose from. Also, although many of these magazines look similar, it is important to remember that some magazines which revolve around celebrity news are more trustworthy than others.

The magazines that are in the top five celebrity magazines all have very wide and extensive histories. They are magazines that pride themselves on providing the readers with as much news a possible when it comes to the various types of gossip that they are interested in. Most of the time, these news magazines provide information on celebrities, wealthy individuals and other people that have, for one reason or another, made it their goal to be in the news and in the public eye. This means, however, that there is a lot of competition amongst the magazines to sell the most copies. Therefore, when you are reading most of the celebrity magazines, you should take things with a grain of salt and make sure that the information you have been given actually checks out in the real world.

Have YOU ever had a panic attack these can be really scary and may make you shake, sweat and breathe quickly. This happens to celebrities too!

A panic attack can cause a you to think something awful is going to happen, that you can’t escape, or that you might lose control. Some people who have panic attacks say that when the attacks are happening, they feel like they can’t think straight or that they’re “going crazy.”

Such panic attacks only last a short time. But to a person who is having one, they can feel much longer.

So what can bring on such a panic attack. Flying, heights, spiders, the dark. Any or all of these can cause a phobia in people including celebrities.

A national survey of 4,000 adults and 1,600 kids revealed that 56 percent of adults admit they now have a fear or a phobia. The survey found that 86 percent of adults and 91 percent of youngsters admitted to being afraid of something.

Nearly one in five adults also said they are scared of more now than they were as a child.

You may not believe it, but even rich and famous celebrities have common, everyday fears just like the rest of us.

So what scares the stars?

Top 10 Fears of celebrities.

1. If you suffer from Acrophobia: fear of heights you may experience immediate anxiety when high up. This apprehension may include a racing heart, shortness of breath, sweating, chest or abdominal discomfort, trembling, and an emotional response which involves an intense fear – of losing control, embarrassing oneself, or passing out. If you suffer from this you are not alone. Rock star Sheryl Crow says heights and hearing “scary” noises frighten her the most.

2. How many of you hate flying or: Aerophobia With this phobia you may have frightening thoughts (this plane might crash; I’m trapped; I must get out). Did you know that Jennifer Aniston, Cher, Michael Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg all hate and fear flying too. Avoiding this feared situation, means not flying. Such a sacrifice limits these celebrities lifestyles severely as they will find it hard to travel long distances.

3. How about situations like being outside, or in a crowd, or even being on a bridge. Such fears are known as: Agoraphobia a fear of being in places or situations from which there is no escape. You are not alone as Woody Allen and Matthew McConaughey who is scared of tunnels and revolving doors also shares this fear.

4. Anyone scared of spiders? Arachnophobia as they called it in the film about the same dread. You can guarantee Justin Timberlake would not have enjoyed this movie or Jaws as he hates spiders, snakes and sharks.

5. Do you break out in a sweat in those little closed in spaces? Uma Thurman is claustrophobic too. She says that in Kill Bill: Vol 2 where she is buried alive in a coffin. “There was no acting needed. Real screams available,” “It was horrific. Nobody wants to live that experience.”

6. When the weather changes and the skies darken do your hands sweat as the thunderstorm approaches? Well if you happen to be with Madonna at the time she will be scared as she suffers from: Brontophobia: fear of thunder!

7. The vampire slayer suffers from Necrophobia: a fear of death. TV’s vampire-slayer Sarah Michelle Gellar has a real fear of graveyards, so real that she refused to film “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in a real one.

8. Do you hate your appearance in the mirror first thing in the morning? Alternatively, maybe you experience undue anxiety when you look at a mirror. This Eisoptrophobia a fear of mirrors is irrational. However this fear is grounded in superstitions. You may worry that breaking a mirror will bring bad luck or that looking into a mirror will put you in contact with a supernatural world inside the glass. Well imagine how poor Pamela Anderson feels for she fears mirrors too!

9. If you get the spooks when you see a clown then you might be suffering from Coulrophobia. Johnny Depp, Daniel Radcliffe and Sean “Diddy” Combs are frightened of clowns. “Something about the painted face, the fake smile,” Depp said in 1999 when he was promoting the film “Sleepy Hollow.” “There always seemed to be a darkness lurking just under the surface, a potential for real evil.”

10. Now here is a strange one! While there is no official name for the phobia of butterflies, it has been linked to Mottephobia (Fear of Moths), or a name such as Lepidopterophobia which is an animal group based on insects butterflies and moths. Who could be scared of such things? Well Nicole Kidman for one she says her greatest fear is butterflies!

So there you have it the top 10 list of celebrity fears. Did I mention poor the celebrity with the most phobias is well that award goes to Woody Allen. He’s afraid of insects, sunshine, dogs, deer, bright colors, children, heights, small rooms, crowds, cancer and anywhere except Manhattan. Imagine that!

By Bronwen Roberts Celebrity Spotting in Britain has become a national pastime.

By Bronwen Roberts

Celebrity Spotting in Britain has become a national pastime. Each year thousands of visitors gather on the streets of London, clutching Timeout magazines; hoping to make some sense from the many pages of where to go and what to do in the City.

Say, you’re a celeb spotter! You’ve come to London for some serious celebrity action. Where would you go to spot the Stars?

Here are some Celebrity Hotspots: some are relatively easy to get in to; but you need to book at least 6 months in advance. Others are membership only, so to land a seat at the bar will require some serious networking on your part.

Celebrity Hotspots

Most people go to The Ivy for the name and the status. You will spend more than the food is worth, but that is to be expected! You’re not there for the sumptuous fare, but for the celebrity action…hopefully! Oak panels, soft lighting, and 1920s stained glass windows enhance the idea that it’s all terribly snobby. The service and attention to detail are exemplary, the menu is eclectic, mainly British/European with a few far-flung influences. But it caters mainly for people who know what they want. Simple ingredients prepared to perfection have earned The Ivy its coveted reputation of serving delightful ‘comfort food’. The cosy dining area almost certainly means if a celebrity is at the next table, you’ll be sitting a stones throw away from them.

Celebrities often seen enjoying the famously diverse menu at The Ivy are David Bowie & Iman, Tom Cruize, Elton John and George Michael

San Lorenzo in Knightsbridge is probably the most infamous restaurant in London, because it was one of Princess Diana’s favourite haunts. The place is still very popular with celebrities and is famous for dishes such as “bagna cauda”, risotto with cheese and asparagus and polenta with blue cheese.

A Knightsbridge institution for the rich and famous, San Lorenzo is notorious for its glamorous clientele, rather than for the quality of its food and service. Its tinted windows protect the privacy of its well-to-do diners. The Italian food is pretty ordinary but the place is always packed, so it’s essential to book.

Stars you could bump into if you decide to visit San Lorenzo are Naomi Campbell, Madonna, Guy Ritchie & Gwyneth Paltrow.

The Groucho Club was established in 1985 and the name was inspired by one of Groucho Marx’s quips; he once remarked that “I don’t want to join a club that will accept me as a member.”

By Kim Thompson

Cylinder music boxes were once a means of providing live music without performers. The music produced was like an ensemble of harpists or bell choir. It was not without its limitations, however. Back in those days, a music box came with some specific sounds, and those were the sounds you had to listen. So, in order to provide some new tunes and improve the music quality of these music boxes, a shifting cylinder was invented.

There were two sets of pins on the cylinders. As one of the sets of pins on the cylinder rang the resonating “teeth” of the “comb” the other sets of pins passed quietly between the teeth. When the song was over, the cylinder would turn over, making the next set of pins to line up with the “teeth”. What was the result of these actions? Well, on some music boxes, you could even get 12 different sounds. After a few years, a new type of cylinder was invented: the interchangeable cylinder. These interchangeable cylinder music boxes had the great advantage of being replaced, with a new cylinder with new tunes. These cylinders were normally made of strong materials, like metal and powered by a spring. In some of the last models, the cylinders could be removed to change melodies, thanks to an invention in 1862, and in some exceptional models, there were four springs, to provide continuous play for up to three hours.

But, because people weren’t satisfied by the performances of these cylinder music boxes, as new devices appeared, the limitations of the cylinder led to the development of Symphonion disc music box. These types of music boxes firstly appeared around 1880 in Leipzig, Germany. They had the great advantage of producing more sound and being more affordable. How did they work? Well, a different technique was developed to punch projections into a durable steel disk and these were used, to pluck the comb. The disc music boxes were then capable of playing 24 or 27 inch discs. To understand better, you should know that a 24 inch disc could play a 2 minute song. So, the music boxes were specially designed to play separate song discs, and this way with just one music box you could listen for several plays.

Because of improving science and technology, most today don’t turn to music boxes for their regular music fix. People purchase music boxes today not to replace their mp3 players and Ipods. It is a way of enjoying music of yesterday and relish in the beauty and art of the days gone past. Yet, for those who are fans, old clocks and watches with small musical pieces are highly recommended. Old wood disc or cylinder music boxes are becoming a rarity these days, and can be considered valuable antiques. Just visit a museum and see some models. From time to time, you can even see them sold online. The music and the craftsmanship of these amazing music boxes will leave you with the yearning to buy one afterwards.

Modern sheet music notation (also known as ‘Printed Music’) now comes in many different formats including the recent invention of digital sheet music (available free to download illegally as well as legally for a fee), often downloadable and printable in the .PDF Portable Digital Format. It can be argued that at least in the Western world there is the beginnings of a move away from the paper book format. Sheet music is different to Tablature (a.k.a Tab or Tabulature) which is another form of musical notation, which tells players where to place their fingers on a particular instrument rather than which pitches to play. This is a popular form of sheet music for beginners learning to play guitar.

If a piece of instrumental music is intended to be performed by more than one musician, each performer will play from a separate piece of sheet music, called a part.

Sheet music is issued as individual pieces or works (e.g. a pop song or a Mozart symphony) or in collections (e.g. works by one or several artists)

When the separate instrumental and sung parts of a musical work are printed together, the resulting sheet music is called a score. A score usually consists of musical notation with each instrumental or vocal part in alignment vertically (meaning that concurrent events in the notation for each part are arranged orthographically). The term score is also used to refer to sheet music written for only one performer.

Sheet music comes in a variety of formats:

• A full score contains the music of all instruments and voices in a musical composition lined up in a fixed order.

• A miniature score is like a full score but smaller in size.

• A study score is often the same size as (and often indistinguishable from) a miniature score, except in name. Some study scores are octavo size and are somewhere between the size of full and miniature scores. Study scores can include extra information about the music and markings for educational purposes.

• A piano score (a.k.a. piano reduction) is a transcription for piano of a piece intended for many performing parts, e.g. orchestral works; this can include purely instrumental sections within large vocal works (see vocal score below).

• A vocal score (a.k.a. a piano-vocal score) is a reduction of the full score of a vocal work (e.g. opera, musical, oratorio, cantata etc.) to show the vocal parts (solo and choral) on their staves and the orchestral parts in a piano reduction (usually for two hands) underneath the vocal parts; the purely orchestral sections of the score are also reduced for piano (without the spoken dialogue). If a portion of the work is a cappella, a piano reduction of the vocal parts is often added to aid rehearsal (this often is the case with religious music).

. A choral score contains the sung parts without accompaniment.

. An organ score contains staves for the sung parts and reduces the orchestral parts to be performed by one person.

. A ‘vocal selection’ is a collection of songs from a given musical.

• A short score consists of a edited version of a work for multiple instruments to just a few staves.

• A lead sheet contains only the melody, lyrics and harmony, using one staff with chord symbols placed above and lyrics below. It is commonly used in pop music to capture the essential elements of song without specifying how the song’s arrangement or performance.

• A chord chart or “chart” contains next to no melodic information but provides detailed information on harmony and rhythm. This is the most common kind of printed music notation used by professional musicians.

Not so very long ago most of us who are old enough to remember probably had a collection of vinyl albums that reflected our wide taste in music. Such technology was all we knew and, with the help of a record player, we could enjoy our songs without having to wait for them to come on the radio. Today, technology is so different that it barely resembles its former self. Music lovers of today carry around portable devices that store all of their favorite songs in a piece of equipment that is barely larger than our thumbs. The MP3 music player technology initially appeared in the mid-1980s but we would not see the player in its present state until the late 1990s – 1999 to be exact. But when it made its appearance it would change the world of music forever.

The MP3 music player utilizes media formatting technology to convert existing audio files to the MP3 format. The MP3 format consists of compressed audio files; audio that has been compressed into very small files that can fit into the MP3 music player. And it achieves this compression without sacrificing the audio’s sound quality. In some instances, depending on capacity of the particular MP3 music player, users can fit thousands of songs within its confines. Better still, because of its size the MP3 music player is a portable unit that can fit in handbags and coat pockets. Users have access to their favorite songs no matter where they are and what they are doing. And as their taste in music changes or expands they simply add additional songs to their MP3 music player collection.

The MP3 music player is able to capture audio files through the use of the computer. The most popular variation of the MP3 music player – the iPod – made linking to the computer simple and convenient for users. So much so that most MP3 music players that are sold today are done so because of their compatibility to Apple software – the company that manufacturers iPod.

On the computer, users can either upload their favorite CDs that can then be downloaded onto the MP3 music player; or they can purchase songs online and then download them to the unit. Apple’s iTunes is the most commonly used musical resource for purchasing and downloading songs.

But aside from the convenience in downloading, the MP3 music player is universally revered for its portability. It can be plugged into your vehicle and played through your car’s audio system, plugged into headphones and played while you exercise, or plugged into portable speakers and played throughout your home. In any case, the MP3 music player is the most comprehensive piece of equipment available on the market today to play music.

All good things in life come free, so you are entitled to get good things like your favorite music free too. Anyone who loves music will second this opinion, I am dead sure about that. Music has a universal appeal, so no matter where you are, you are bound to come across a person who loves music. Remember loving music does not mean that one just loves to listen to them; you will find that most people hum the latest tune in their own way. Today there are many big names involved in the field of music production and today if you want to listen to songs of your favorite band or singer it is not so difficult. You can listen to all the latest music in the radio and satellite television has also made things easily accessible to you. So whether it is Beyonce, Akon, Shakira or any other signer you can listen to the tunes of all these signers.

As I mentioned earlier listening to music is not at all difficult, but what is annoying for music fans is that they cannot listen to the music at their own sweet will. Surely you will have to wait for the radio station to play that music or the satellite television to broadcast that song, so that you can see that. Now here is the scenario where free music can come to your rescue. The web has many sites that offer music lovers the option of downloading music for free; in fact there is an overpopulation of such sites. Most of these downloads are legal, so you do not have to feel guilty whether you are downloading the music of your favorite band or singer. However just take a closer look at the site to find out if they downloading are legal or not.

Music as I said earlier has no boundaries and if you are a true music lover, you will surely find out the means through which you can get free music. The internet has made things so simple for all of us, that all we need to do is hit a few buttons with our mouse and everything is right there for you. So whether you love to listen to classic rock music, country music, hip hop, instrumental, jazz, movie soundtracks, pop, reggae, rap, rock remix or wedding music you just need to find that in the web. All the sites have a huge database of music covering various categories. So if you know the name of the band or the singer, you can easily get the music and download it and listen to that in your MP3 player.

There are some sites that specialize in offering music of certain categories. So if you are a music fan that loves to listen to that old music of the 80’s of before, you can get it in those sites. Free music downloads have come as a boon to all those music lovers who love to listen to music of any kind at their own convenient time. You are indeed free to download all those free music from the web.

By Jason Bacot There was a time when music stores ruled the airwaves.

By Jason Bacot

There was a time when music stores ruled the airwaves. You could not go one mile in a city and not come across one, and the parking lot was always full. Then came online digital music. Now you can not find hardly a single music store that exists solely on the back of CDs and music sales. They have to sell other things to even survive. Why is this? Is digital music and online music really that much better? Here are several reasons why online digital music has overtaken the music stores of the world.

One easy reason that online music is superior to music stores is cost. You can download a great deal of music online at very little cost, and that is impossible to compete against. Even with iTunes and other MP3 downloads, you are still paying a pittance in comparison to CD prices. Downloading music is much cheaper than buying an entire CD.

Selection is another reason online digital music is superior. You can literally pick and choose among the songs you like, and only buy what you like. It used to be you had to buy the entire CD, and usually only liked one or two songs. With MP3 downloads, you can make your own mixed CD of sorts digitally, and have only the best of your music in a snap. Selection is awesome with digital music.

Portability is another huge thing with digital music. Remember when you got your first Walkman? How can that possibly compare with MP3 players and iPods? It can not. For example, you would have to carry not only the bulky CD player, but you would also have to carry 300 CDs around with you as well to match what your iPod can carry in most cases. Who would choose to do that?

Finally, sound is another factor. CDs always skipped it seemed, regardless of how you were listening. You would make one wrong move in the car or in your bedroom, and your CDs were skipping and getting scratched. With MP3 players and iPods, you need not worry about such things. Your music will be crystal clear regardless of how many Kevin Bacon “Footloose” dance steps you might make while listening. You need not ever worry about a scratched CD, as the music is digitally recorded. That same digital recording will also ensure that the music is reproduced in a perfect way. There is no better sound on Earth than digital music.

Online digital music is so vastly superior to CDs that it is likely the CD will go the way of the 8-track. There is simply no good reason to have CD around except to keep copies of your music as backups. Even that can be done more economically by putting them on your computer. Digital music is the wave of the future, and every person that listens to music will benefit from it over time. What is so exciting about online digital music is that we have only scratched the surface of what is possible. I remember when CDs were the latest craze and look at them now. What will be on the market in 2020? I can’t wait to find out.

The foundation of our musical training is the practice time we spend with our chosen instrument. Musical study away from our instrument, however, develops our level of sophistication and understanding of the music we are playing. Many activities that we already participate in can be opportunities for developing our musical knowledge. We will explore some these activities, and how to integrate them into the learning process.

We probably cultivated our interest in music through listening to recordings and live performances. As musicians we want to engage ourselves in listening to music in the same way we would read a book or watch a movie. We can accomplish this by following along recordings with the score in hand. If you haven’t attempted this before, it may take a while to be able to perform this kind of active listening, but is well worth the effort. You may wish to start by just keeping track of the measures as they go by rather than focusing directly on the pitches. With time your overall reading skills will improve.

Your choice of listening material should be quite diverse. Include pieces that you are practicing, and those that you are not. Explore many genres, instrumentals, composers, and style periods to broaden your understanding of music and help you generate new interpretations for your music.

You can enhance your concert experience by doing a little advanced preparation. If possible, listen to some recordings of the performers, and pieces on the program. Find out a little about the performers themselves such as their personal biographies, musical specialties, and musical training.

You can gain new insights into a piece that you are working on by studying the score. Outline and note its form, themes and the different keys that the piece moves through. You can also plan out your next practice session by identifying a particular section that needs work, or dividing the composition into different parts to aid in its memorization.

Spend time working on ear-training. Learning to sight sing, take musical dictation, and identify intervals and chords develops your internal ear, improves your sight reading skills, and facilitates learning new music.

Take a few months to learn the basics of a second instrument. Find an instrument that is completely different from the one you now play. If you play a melody instrument, develop some keyboard skills. Basic keyboard skills become essential if your musical studies involve any theory or composition. If you are a keyboardist already, try a wind or string instrument.

Finally, enjoy the learning process with a long-term perspective on your studies. Making music is rewarding lifetime pursuit whether as a professional or as an educated fan. Once you’ve mastered a few of the techniques we’ve just discussed, you’ll find that you can take any spare time you have, whether a few minutes with your instrument or even without, and use it to help you become the musician you always knew you could be.

Small amounts of practice tend to be the most effective in helping you advance musically, shoot for 15-20 minutes of practice per day (no more than 30 to be sure) at music reading and music theory, and about 30-45 minutes per day of practice on your chosen instrument. Before long you’ll be amazed at how much your musicianship has accelerated!
