We dote on celebrities because they are larger than life, more famous, more charismatic, and richer than us. It seems like our celebrity obsessed society cannot get enough of the daily lives of such star celebrities. Newspapers boost their sales by splashing these celebrities across their front pages, many magazines feature celebrities within them.

- How did celebrities become such an important force in our culture?

- Have we always been so awestruck by the lifestyles of the rich and the famous?

- Does something larger than life always catch our attention?

- Is there a common theme throughout history?

Perhaps we can find some of the answers by looking at celebrity in history. First let us remind ourselves of the importance of being awestruck. An old tale of a mouse who boasts of her huge litter of babies to a lioness illustrates the point of why we find celebrities fascinating. The mouse asks the Lioness proudly “how many young have you the great cat given birth to? The Lioness replied “One, but he is a lion,”

The First Celebrities in History.

The first celebrities of the ancient world were almighty powerful Gods of the Greek and Roman pantheons. Citizens of these civilizations believed the Gods had a direct influence on their lives and it was, hence, important to know all about the Gods’ own lives. As people in the ancient world spread information about the Gods, myths were created. Such myths involved the Gods in ancient celebrity scandals that excited and teased the common people. We have all heard of how the ancient Greeks believed the Gods were angered during some unexplainable event like a volcano erupting or an earthquake.

Besides the ancient Gods monarchs and political leaders were also celebrities of the time, however their fame could not possibly compete with that of the Gods. They could not move the earth or cause the heavens to open. Thus the ancient Gods had exposure everywhere. There were statues and temples named after them, sacrifices and holidays in their honor. In other words the ancient Gods had lots of exposure.

The Celebrity Sportsmen of the Olympics.

Another group of celebrities that had great exposure to the public were, in fact, winners in the ancient Olympic Games. These athletes were widely talked about, and were given the equivalent of modern day red-carpet treatment. After a victory at the Olympics a winning athlete on returning to his city, part of the city wall was demolished so they did not have to use the gates like “ordinary mortals”. These athletes also won the right to lifelong free meals, the equivalent of the vast sums of money that modern celebrities earn nowadays.

The Celebrity Gladiators.

Ancient celebrities were known to the masses because they had their faces plastered all over the place, on sculptures and pictures. Julius Caesar also realized this and was the first Roman to appear on a coin in his own lifetime, he became instantly recognizable and more powerful at the same time. Another group of people who were recognized were the Roman Gladiators, whose bloodthirsty contests drew thousands of spectators to the gladiatorial battles. News of their battles spread by word of mouth, and little boys idolized them, often asking for fighting lesson at gladiator schools. Many women were also known to have illicit affairs with the muscle-bound fearless fighters.

Celebrities in The Middle Ages.

When we think of the middle ages most people think of brave warriors and heroic knights in shining Armor, killing dragons and rescuing damsels in distress. While this is the image that many of us think of when we talk about knights in shining Armor the reality was a little different.

Thousands of years ago, one of the best ways to gain fame was through the fortune of birth. The first step to become famous was to become a squire. Such squires were only drawn from the families of the nobility, they might be sons of knights or lords or even princes. Once a squire became a knight he was an instant celebrity. He would be given a coat of arms which he could pass on down through the generations.

Knights also became famous in their treatment of women. In medieval Europe the idea was born that men should treat women not as a possession but as a person to be admired. This idea led to the fashion that knights should do heroic deeds just to win a smile from a lady. The knights and squires were taught to worship beautiful women and do brave things in her name. A very public display of their bravery was seen at medieval tournaments.

Medieval tournaments were originally a form of military training, but soon became popular public displays for brave knights to win favor of a special lady, often a countess or even a princess. Jousting was the main form of competition and many a knight could show off in front of the large crowds at these public events. Celebrity status was thus guaranteed, for the winner of these popular competitions. These competitions were a way for Knights to win fame and fortune. Not only did they become popular with the masses, but the winners often took the losers horse and Armor and even the lady who might be an heiress to some vast fortune. Over time a different kind of event became popular. The play.

Rise of the Arts and William Shakespeare.

William Shakespeare began his career as an actor with a London theatrical company–perhaps in 1589–for he was already an actor and playwright of some note in 1592. Plays were a popular form of entertainment for all layers of society in Shakespeare’s time. This may explain why Hamlet feels compelled to instruct the traveling Players on the fine points of acting, urging them not “to split the ears of the groundlings,” nor “speak no more than is set down for them.”

William Shakespeare’s plays were popular because the stories are timeless and beautifully written. Shakespeare’s plays are timeless in the lessons that are learned from them. Think about what is learn from “Macbeth”

1. Meddling in dark magic is dangerous.

2. Absolute power corrupts.

3. Loyalty is a good thing…being so power-hungry that you’re willing to kill is a bad thing.

4. “To thine own self be true.” Don’t let yourself be influenced by other people – don’t let their name-calling push you into doing things you’re not comfortable with (Lady Macbeth and how she taunted her husband).

Shakespeare became a celebrity in his own time because he wrote plays about universal themes that are true for all humanity, regardless of time period, gender, race, religion, or continent. We have all experienced, love, hate, forgiveness and revenge. We are all interested in the paranormal, salvation, ambition, success and juicy gossip–why else would movies, sitcoms, reality TV and soap operas be such a huge entertainment value?

These are all great reason why Shakespearean plays like Macbeth endured, they certainly have stories with staying power. Shakespeare was also good with his representations of imagery, alliteration, irony, analogy, soliloquy, monologue, aside, figurative language like metaphors, extended metaphors, similes, personification, symbolism. But it was the plays that made him a celebrity in his own time, not his writings. For the plays were attended by the vast populace and news of what they saw spread by word of mouth, and with the stories, Shakespeare’s name and fame was spread too.

Celebrities in Print.

While the celebrities of the ancient world were able to achieve moderate and sometimes lasting fame, mass celebrity as we now know today would not begin until the invention of the printing and publishing industry in the late eighteenth century. With the rise of printing a need to learn to read was recognized. There was a huge increase in the literacy rates of common people, allowing printed celebrity news to reach a mass audience for the first time. Suddenly, the lives of authors, political figures, war heroes, and other celebrities could now be read by people all around the world. Print gave average people the chance to become intimately knowledgeable about the celebrities they most admired. Charles Dickens first started serializing his books in newspapers as short stories. The resulting media attention helped him become more widely read celebrity of his time.

Celebrities in the 20th Century.

From the print media came the visual media of film and radio. In first part of the 1900s, movie stars began to be the true A-list celebrities. The bright lights and warm sun of Hollywood became a perfect setting for the city of the stars. As radio began to make its way into the average home in the 1920s and 1930s, celebrities became more interesting to regular people. Professional athletes also began to take on star status, as their games and exploits could be also be broadcast live over the air for an entirely new audience. In the 1950s television only further promoted the premier celebrity that film stars, professional athletes, and television actors of today shared. Not to miss out, political and religious figures sought to take advantage of the new medium. Such celebrities would still become famous but their fame was dwarfed in comparison to the new Hollywood Celebrities of the 20th Century.

Technology and the modern Celebrity.

In the twenty-first century, the rise of the Internet has only continued to nurture a culture

That is obsessed with celebrities. It is now possible to know intimate details about a famous person’s life by simply entering a few keywords into an Internet search engine. In the late 1960s, Andy Warhol, an artist, filmmaker, and diarist fascinated by Hollywood culture, claimed: “In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” That is now a fact with emerging reality television shows. These shows have made it possible for average people with little talent to enjoy their 15 minutes of fame on the television reality shows.

Where we are and how we got here.

One common theme throughout celebrity history is that all the big celebrities were marked out to be famous because they were part of a larger than life event. In Ancient times the event was the Olympics that made winning athletes famous celebrities. The Romans gave us the Gladiators who fought to the death in front of a bloodthirsty audience, another large event. In the middle ages it was the Knights who again in front of large audiences won at Tournaments and became famous traveling warriors, again a large audience event. In William Shakespeare’s time the event was live theater where audiences could vicariously watch struggles of fictional but believable characters. Before we knew it newspapers, radio, cinema, television and the Internet brought these live larger than life events into our own living rooms. Whether we are watching a live football match, or listening to a live concert on the radio. One thing is for sure while there are audiences out there, thirsty for live larger than life events, then there will be celebrities out there that seek to entertain them.

If you flip through a magazine, go to the movies or watch television, you have probably seen some celebrity hairstyles that are stunning (and maybe some that are not). Most people have celebrity hairstyles that they would like to imitate, but assume that copying celebrity hairstyles requires perfect locks or spending a fortune at a hair salon.

Although there is nothing quite like a professionally set hairstyle, it is possible to imitate many of the looks you see on the runway and in the media. All that is required is patience, persistence, a good eye and the right equipment and techniques.

Almost all starlets have their own version of the sedu, one of the most popular celebrity hairstyles. The sedu is a straight look, and many of these straight hair dos are “messy” and have a “blown” look to them, although some are sleek. Jennifer Anniston is the actress who made the sedu look famous, and she has an advantage with her naturally ruler-straight locks.

However, you can have naturally curly and wavy hair and still achieve sedu-perfect straightness with a flat iron. To have a look like Jennifer Anniston’s, apply the following techniques:

• Shampoo and condition hair (conditioner is especially important, since it tames curls and waves)

• Brush your hair flat and apply gel

• Blow dry your hair with a round brush. Point the barrel of the dryer downard to avoid frizzing and waving

• Take one inch wide sections of your hair and press it flat with a sedu iron. If you want a perfectly straight “do” do not flip at the ends, or you can flip the hair or out by twisting the ends around the flat iron.

Reese Witherspoon sported one of the most memorable celebrity hairstyles at the academy awards. Her elegant chignon elicited as much comment as her spectacular performance. A chignon is not difficult to shape, and is formed by a ponytail that is perched just a few inches off the neck.

The chignon is good for long to medium length hair, since the “pony” requires enough hair to be formed into a roll.

•Shampoo and condition hair (you might want to do this the day before the big occasion, since freshly washed pony’s are more difficult to style)

•Rinse out the conditioner and follow with a cool rinse for shine

•Towel dry and apply a leave-in conditioner

•Dry with a blowdryer and a paddle brush

•Form a ponytail at the nape of the neck and divide the pony into three sections

•Curl the pony sections with a curling iron and pin the curls until they are cool

•Brush the pony gently and wrap it around the elastic band, arranging it to the right size and shape.

Keira Knightley’s new super-short “pixie do” became an overnight sensational celebrity hairstyle, although some felt it was a bit drastic. Still, she has the eyes and the perfect face for a pixie do.

You don’t have to be a Keira look-a-like to look good in a pixie; if your face is somewhat oval, it is a good style.

•The stylist should form the back into a “wedge shape”

•Leave generous bangs in front for a feminine look, and to emphasize the eyes

•Adjust the bangs according to your mood. You might want to curl them or to straighten them with a sedu iron.

The Pixie style is a sassy look which is quite attractive, and is a good style for summer.

Paris Hilton sported some elegant sedu bobs until she sheared most of her locks. What she will do with her super-short hair now, remains to be seen, but you can re-create her signature bobs with a sedu iron, gently flipping the ends inward or outward according to your mood. Paris also wore her hair sometimes in a half-up, half-down, asymmetrical style. Experiment with pulling parts of your hair up and leaving them down according to your mood.

Ever thought about how many perfumes are there on the shelf that is from celebrities like Paris Hilton and David Beckham. When is the latest celebrity perfume range coming up next? Have you checked out the latest Pour Femme, a 145 scent that claims that it is a harmonious blend of essences like tea and rose jasmine?

In celebrity perfumes, the rage is always for the most expensive one in the line. The old is the latest fashion around. In the middle of a sudden increase of new fragrances that are getting all the time more luxurious and classy to roll out, and harder to move ahead of the crowd. Some perfume companies are looking to store up earnings and diminish risk by re introducing old fragrances. The celebrity scents are promoted to appeal to a fresh age bracket of perfume-users. The most up-to-date products in the field of celebrity perfumes and fragrances involve big perfume campaigns and, in some cases, more well known displays in area stores. The marketplace is highly demanding for celebrity perfumes right now and experts believe that there will be an ever increasing, energy within this existing brand.

The perfume industry slipped down in the year 2001 and was continuously falling till the end of 2004 until a whole new range was launched in the celebrity section in U.S. which was highly appreciated for its new style and smell. Last year, more than 120 new perfumes were started at all department stores in U.S., which was more than twice the number in the year 2000. Many of the celebrity perfumes are introduced by fashion designers, celebrities, and even car companies.

Many celebrities have used the occasion of the launch of perfumes for cashing their own reputations. There are many to name like Britney Spears who has made use of her provocative figure to promote her range of scents, Curious and Fantasy. Curious was Britney’s first perfume to be launched and since it was promoted by a star, needless to say that it made a huge success.

In the lines of Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson too appears to be cashing in on her name as a beloved honey with her new products like the Dessert Treats beauty line. This consists of fragrances that smell similar to sugary treats. Her two perfumes are Candy and Cupcake and it appears that all of them are edible and taste just like their names.

However, you must be aware that while purchasing these costly perfumes you are not duped by the smell and the brands. Make sure that you are perfectly comfortable with what ever you choose

Celebrity Spotting in Britain has become a national pastime. Each year thousands of visitors gather on the streets of London, clutching Timeout magazines; hoping to make some sense from the many pages of where to go and what to do in the City.

Say, you’re a celeb spotter! You’ve come to London for some serious celebrity action. Where would you go to spot the Stars?

Here are some Celebrity Hotspots: some are relatively easy to get in to; but you need to book at least 6 months in advance. Others are membership only, so to land a seat at the bar will require some serious networking on your part.

Celebrity Hotspots

Most people go to The Ivy for the name and the status. You will spend more than the food is worth, but that is to be expected! You’re not there for the sumptuous fare, but for the celebrity action…hopefully! Oak panels, soft lighting, and 1920s stained glass windows enhance the idea that it’s all terribly snobby. The service and attention to detail are exemplary, the menu is eclectic, mainly British/European with a few far-flung influences. But it caters mainly for people who know what they want. Simple ingredients prepared to perfection have earned The Ivy its coveted reputation of serving delightful ‘comfort food’. The cosy dining area almost certainly means if a celebrity is at the next table, you’ll be sitting a stones throw away from them.

Celebrities often seen enjoying the famously diverse menu at The Ivy are David Bowie & Iman, Tom Cruize, Elton John and George Michael

San Lorenzo in Knightsbridge is probably the most infamous restaurant in London, because it was one of Princess Diana’s favourite haunts. The place is still very popular with celebrities and is famous for dishes such as “bagna cauda”, risotto with cheese and asparagus and polenta with blue cheese.

A Knightsbridge institution for the rich and famous, San Lorenzo is notorious for its glamorous clientele, rather than for the quality of its food and service. Its tinted windows protect the privacy of its well-to-do diners. The Italian food is pretty ordinary but the place is always packed, so it’s essential to book.

Stars you could bump into if you decide to visit San Lorenzo are Naomi Campbell, Madonna, Guy Ritchie & Gwyneth Paltrow.

The Groucho Club was established in 1985 and the name was inspired by one of Groucho Marx’s quips; he once remarked that “I don’t want to join a club that will accept me as a member.”

The original membership was drawn from the publishing world but over the years has expanded to include all creative fields of the media and arts. Soho with its bohemian history and working and living population of writers, artists and filmmakers was the natural location. The Groucho is the original modern members club. The infamous membership Committee has long been the fearless arbiters of who is considered a suitable Groucho Club person. Concerts, exhibitions and parties are hosted here and the 19 bedrooms are open to members and their guests. You’ll have to make friends with a member just to get into the Bar area.

They say membership to the Groucho Club is more exclusive than the SAS and nearly as tough to get in; more mysterious than the Mason’s, with an initiation ceremony that would make a Ninja faint.

Celebrities whom you might see at The Groucho include, Jude Law, Sadie Frost, Kate Moss & Robert Downey Jr.

By Kim Thompson

Cylinder music boxes were once a means of providing live music without performers. The music produced was like an ensemble of harpists or bell choir. It was not without its limitations, however. Back in those days, a music box came with some specific sounds, and those were the sounds you had to listen. So, in order to provide some new tunes and improve the music quality of these music boxes, a shifting cylinder was invented.

There were two sets of pins on the cylinders. As one of the sets of pins on the cylinder rang the resonating “teeth” of the “comb” the other sets of pins passed quietly between the teeth. When the song was over, the cylinder would turn over, making the next set of pins to line up with the “teeth”. What was the result of these actions? Well, on some music boxes, you could even get 12 different sounds. After a few years, a new type of cylinder was invented: the interchangeable cylinder. These interchangeable cylinder music boxes had the great advantage of being replaced, with a new cylinder with new tunes. These cylinders were normally made of strong materials, like metal and powered by a spring. In some of the last models, the cylinders could be removed to change melodies, thanks to an invention in 1862, and in some exceptional models, there were four springs, to provide continuous play for up to three hours.

But, because people weren’t satisfied by the performances of these cylinder music boxes, as new devices appeared, the limitations of the cylinder led to the development of Symphonion disc music box. These types of music boxes firstly appeared around 1880 in Leipzig, Germany. They had the great advantage of producing more sound and being more affordable. How did they work? Well, a different technique was developed to punch projections into a durable steel disk and these were used, to pluck the comb. The disc music boxes were then capable of playing 24 or 27 inch discs. To understand better, you should know that a 24 inch disc could play a 2 minute song. So, the music boxes were specially designed to play separate song discs, and this way with just one music box you could listen for several plays.

Because of improving science and technology, most today don’t turn to music boxes for their regular music fix. People purchase music boxes today not to replace their mp3 players and Ipods. It is a way of enjoying music of yesterday and relish in the beauty and art of the days gone past. Yet, for those who are fans, old clocks and watches with small musical pieces are highly recommended. Old wood disc or cylinder music boxes are becoming a rarity these days, and can be considered valuable antiques. Just visit a museum and see some models. From time to time, you can even see them sold online. The music and the craftsmanship of these amazing music boxes will leave you with the yearning to buy one afterwards.

It’s that time of the year again when I’m a Celebrity – Get Me Out of Here is back on our television screens, and this season’s line-up is seasoned with a veritable list of stars from the world of politics and entertainment. Some, such as the beautiful Dani Behr and Nicola McLean are no doubt early Christmas Gifts for the boys, while the celebrities Robert Kilroy-Silk and Brian Paddick are early Christmas Gifts of an altogether different kind. Indeed, with Robert Kilroy-Silk known for his controversial views, it’s probably a certainty that more than a few tense sparks will fly during his time in the jungle. And, as for George Takei, he’s probably continuing his career of making sure he’s going where no man has gone before. Or, at least that would be the case if this weren’t the show’s eighth series in the UK.

In keeping with the show’s usual format, each of the contestants has to compete in a number of Bushtucker Trials; and, although the show is still in it’s infancy, a number of classic trials have already taken place. Dubbed the Chamber of Horrors, the I Scream Van, the Long Drop and Trauma Tank, they pit the celebrities against the natural world in an effort to win food.

But what if these trials could be a way to earn Christmas Gifts, what prizes should be on offer? Probably top of the list should be loo roll; after all, no matter how long they spend in the jungle, there’s nothing more traumatic than not getting access to some of the bare necessities of the bathroom world. If they were to win the On a Roll Sudoku Toilet Roll, they could take their minds off of their previous bushtucker trial; and maybe the Millionaire’s Loo Roll would be a great way for them to focus their minds on why they’re their. After all, being charitable over the festive period is one of the best Christmas Gifts anyone can give.

But when it comes to making life in the jungle just that little bit more bearable, there are so many other gifts to choose from. If any of the contestants are missing their loved ones, they might like to count down the days using a personalised Calendar. Ideal for giving at any time of year – they don’t just make ideal Christmas Gifts – Personalised Calendars are available in any number of different designs. So, whether they’re looking to enjoy some of the Wonders of the World while surrounded by bugs or creepy crawlies, or if they’d prefer the Food Lovers Personalised Calendar – to remind themselves of all of the delicious food they’ll soon be able to enjoy – Personalised Calendars are the ideal gifts for making those bushtucker trials seem just that little bit more bearable.

Of course, it might well be the case that the current round of celebrity contestants find some of the tests just that little bit too traumatic. If this is the case, then perhaps some of the bushtucker trial rewards should include the odd Personalised Diary or two. While certainly making outstanding Christmas Gifts, Personalised Diaries could also be a great way for traumatised celebrities to get some things off of their chests without announcing them on camera to the rest of the world. And in the case of Robert Kilroy-Silk, they could offer the opportunity to say some really controversial stuff, safe in the knowledge that nobody will get upset; unless of course anyone takes a sneaky peek.

Of course, Personalised Diaries are available in a number of different designs, so whether the contestants are big football fans, film buffs, or romantic types that never tire of notions of love, Personalised Diaries are sure to delight.

And if they were to save them until after the show, they might even make an amazing Christmas Gift for that someone special.

People enjoy music in their community, some as audience members and some as participants as well. Learning how to read music for the first time or as a refresher will open horizons that transcend other forms of communication. Written music is a language of the world. Whatever one’s life has been, acquiring or refreshing basic music reading skills will enhance the enjoyment and success in this artistic endeavor. Some people have no formal musical background, or haven’t picked up their instruments or sung since grade school. Now is a great time to learn or relearn the basics. Anything that you learn or refresh from years ago is a gain. Gracefully accept age related limitations while learning to innovate, and you’ll be enlarging your musical world.

Reading music starts with being able to see what is in front of you. Make sure that you have plenty of light, that you can easily see what is written on the instructional music page in front of you and that you are comfortable physically. If you can’t see the music, try a larger print version of a beginning music instruction book. Reading glasses might also help. The piano or keyboard is a good instrument on which to base your initial music reading skill application. Pianos are widely available in community settings. Because the keyboard is a percussion instrument, a beginner can practice music reading skills and immediately hear the translation of what they are seeing on paper. Even if you plan to sing rather than play an instrument, being able to find your first note and hear it on the piano is hugely gratifying.

The first thing to learn about the keyboard is the location of middle C. A regular sized piano has 88 keys, 52 white keys and 36 black keys. Count only the white keys from the left or lower tones. The 24th one is middle C. It may be helpful to mark it with placement of a penny or sticky note with the letter C written on it. Another way to locate this note is to find the middle area of keys. Middle C is the white key just left of the group of two black keys. Confirm the placement of middle C by both methods.

Now look at middle C written on music paper. For now we will only consider notes starting at middle C and going to the right or higher in tone. Middle C is denoted below the five lines landing on what would be the next horizontal line which horizontally bisects the written note.

Now gently strike the note you marked previously as middle C. Learn the notation shown above and practice finding it on the piano. Listen to the tone. Practice finding middle C without the penny or written clue. Repeat looking at the Middle C on the music paper and finding it on the piano keyboard. Practice this 7 to 10 times over a week, for no more than 30 minutes per day. Congratulations on reading your first musical note!

If you listen to today’s music on the radio, you will hear a wide variety of songs and beats. You even nowadays hear people singing over hip hop beats, and people rapping over r&b beats! The two genres are blending a lot in today’s music. One of the mistakes that many underground rap artists make is, they are so concerned about being what they call “real” as in being gangsta or hard.

It seems like they are more concerned about being “real” then they are about selling records and making money. So they use only beats that are hard and “gangsta” sounding. They talk about shooting and killing over these hard rap beats. It’s ok for them to do this if this is what they want, but every song on the album can’t be that way if they want to be a successful multi-platinum selling artist. If you want to get your music on the radio, and on BET or MTV, you have to have at least a few singles, that are more commercial.

A lot of artists don’t do this, and they miss out on a whole entire market of possible customers! The goal is to capture the attention of these people through mass media such as the radio and tv, so that they will purchase the album. Once they buy the album, they will then have access to the rest of your different styles.

Keep This in Mind:

People in the streets will burn your CD! Listeners from the Radio and T.V. will buy your CD!

Which one do you think will get you to Platinum Status Faster?

My artists are going to sell 200,000+ CD’s this year! How about you?

So the point is, if your goal is to capture as many sells as you can, then you have to make music that everybody can listen to. You can’t make music only for the streets. You have to make it for the streets, the club, the radio/tv, and for the car. That way, you can receive sells and money from all of those different markets, instead of just from the streets. Today’s hit music has one thing in common: No matter how stupid it may sound, it is catchy. Don’t believe me? Listen to Laffy Taffy! It may get horrible ratings from a lot of Hip-Hop Heads, but the girls love it, and it sticks with you. Think about it: How many times have you talked about it with someone since the song came out? How many times have you listened to it when it came on the radio just to see how stupid it was?

The Music Industry is not only limited to 25 music careers and – is not just for singers, rappers, musicians, dancers, song writers, producers, etc. that are super talented. (and some not so talented) It’s also for those that love a behind the desk job, or hands on work or technical electronics or the office executive and so on and so on.

Many pass over the thought of themselves actually working in the industry due to the common mindset… “if one has talent they have a chance in music.” If one wants weekly (or bi-weekly) pay with benefits one seeks a normal job in the 9-5 workforce. This is simply false. Most people love music to some extent. Those that are paying attention to their future and careers know or at least wish they can be involved with something they love.

Many will admit they believe they don’t have what it takes to make it in the music industry and some will admit they don’t have a desire to be a musical artist. But many will also admit they need a job, and for longevity’s sake will admit they need a career they love. They love music and need career involvement in something they love.

Well… it just so happens that the music industry employs millions all around the world in positions that are not directly artist related or even behind the scenes artist related. The fact is there are over 120 different careers with lucrative futures in the music industry. Now multiply that by the thousands of record labels, advertising agencies, law firms, and so on all over the globe. These careers range from secretaries all the way up to C.E.O.’s of major music corporations. Do you like manual labor, advertising, practicing law, or preparing clothes? If so the music industry has something for you and so much more!

The music industry has involvement in almost every facet of our everyday lives. The music industry alone is responsible for offering some of the most exciting careers known to mankind. These careers are no harder to find than any other types of job as long as you’re willing to look. Yes, of course some jobs require training and hard work and some don’t. But that’s nothing someone seeking a career wouldn’t find even if they were applying for a job at the local telephone company or the like. But! How many people really LOVE their jobs at the telephone company? Or rather how many people love their telephone company job when they can be doing the same thing in the music industry while waving to one of their favorite music artists as they walk down the record label’s hallway for a 2:00 pm appointment with the record executives?

You don’t have to settle anymore with the thought of just getting by in your 9-5 job that you either don’t think much about or that you even hate. You should be searching and conquering a job/career in an arena you can identify with. It doesn’t have to be in music but it should be in you! If you do identify with the music industry, remember there aren’t only 25 music careers. There are as many as you need to be happy.

The foundation of our musical training is the practice time we spend with our chosen instrument. Musical study away from our instrument, however, develops our level of sophistication and understanding of the music we are playing. Many activities that we already participate in can be opportunities for developing our musical knowledge. We will explore some these activities, and how to integrate them into the learning process.

We probably cultivated our interest in music through listening to recordings and live performances. As musicians we want to engage ourselves in listening to music in the same way we would read a book or watch a movie. We can accomplish this by following along recordings with the score in hand. If you haven’t attempted this before, it may take a while to be able to perform this kind of active listening, but is well worth the effort. You may wish to start by just keeping track of the measures as they go by rather than focusing directly on the pitches. With time your overall reading skills will improve.

Your choice of listening material should be quite diverse. Include pieces that you are practicing, and those that you are not. Explore many genres, instrumentals, composers, and style periods to broaden your understanding of music and help you generate new interpretations for your music.

You can enhance your concert experience by doing a little advanced preparation. If possible, listen to some recordings of the performers, and pieces on the program. Find out a little about the performers themselves such as their personal biographies, musical specialties, and musical training.

You can gain new insights into a piece that you are working on by studying the score. Outline and note its form, themes and the different keys that the piece moves through. You can also plan out your next practice session by identifying a particular section that needs work, or dividing the composition into different parts to aid in its memorization.

Spend time working on ear-training. Learning to sight sing, take musical dictation, and identify intervals and chords develops your internal ear, improves your sight reading skills, and facilitates learning new music.

Take a few months to learn the basics of a second instrument. Find an instrument that is completely different from the one you now play. If you play a melody instrument, develop some keyboard skills. Basic keyboard skills become essential if your musical studies involve any theory or composition. If you are a keyboardist already, try a wind or string instrument.

Finally, enjoy the learning process with a long-term perspective on your studies. Making music is rewarding lifetime pursuit whether as a professional or as an educated fan. Once you’ve mastered a few of the techniques we’ve just discussed, you’ll find that you can take any spare time you have, whether a few minutes with your instrument or even without, and use it to help you become the musician you always knew you could be.

Small amounts of practice tend to be the most effective in helping you advance musically, shoot for 15-20 minutes of practice per day (no more than 30 to be sure) at music reading and music theory, and about 30-45 minutes per day of practice on your chosen instrument. Before long you’ll be amazed at how much your musicianship has accelerated!
